# PROMPT.LATEST

> Read the active version of a prompt template.

The prompt registry stores versioned prompt templates by name, with one version marked active, so you can roll a prompt forward or back without deploying code. `PROMPT.LATEST` returns the template's active version, exactly
like [PROMPT.GET](https://docs.hotkv.com/commands/prompt-get/index.md) without a version. The active version is the most
recent one unless you have pointed it at an older one with
[PROMPT.SETACTIVE](https://docs.hotkv.com/commands/prompt-setactive/index.md); in that case `PROMPT.LATEST` returns the older,
active version. Use [PROMPT.VERSIONS](https://docs.hotkv.com/commands/prompt-versions/index.md) to find the highest version
number.

## Return value

Errors:

- `ERR wrong number of arguments for 'prompt.latest' command` if the argument count is wrong.
- `NOLICENSE prompt-registry requires a HotKV license. Contact sales@hotkv.com` if your license does not include the `prompt-registry` feature.

## Compatibility

HotKV-only command. Redis and Valkey have no equivalent.
