# REPLICATION.PAUSE

`REPLICATION.PAUSE` holds replication on this node, for example during
maintenance on the network or on a replica host.

- On a primary, writes keep being accepted and are queued for the replicas,
  but nothing is sent to them until you resume. Heartbeats and the
  acknowledgements [WAIT](https://docs.hotkv.com/commands/wait/index.md) asks for still go out.
- On a replica, the replica stops reading its primary's stream; it serves
  its data as it was when paused.

[REPLICATION.INFO](https://docs.hotkv.com/commands/replication-info/index.md) shows `state` `paused` until
[REPLICATION.RESUME](https://docs.hotkv.com/commands/replication-resume/index.md). Pausing twice is
harmless. A long pause on a busy primary makes the replicas fall further
behind, so resume promptly.

## Return value

Simple string `OK` in RESP2 and RESP3. Without a license that includes
`replication`: `NOLICENSE replication requires a HotKV license. Contact sales@hotkv.com`.
